A-League report: Victory 0-6 City

Callum McManaman

Melbourne Victory suffered a 6-0 Derby loss to City in the A-League at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

Summary

Jamie Maclaren missed a first-half penalty for City before opening the scoring prior to the break.

Florin Berenguer and Rostyn Griffiths scored before a Connor Metcalfe brace and Stefan Colakovski strike in the second half for City.

Victory goalkeeper Max Crocombe was forced into an early save, denying Metcalfe at his near post in the fourth minute.

City had a chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 17th minute after Dalibor Markovic brought down Nathaniel Atkinson in the area.

But Maclaren was unable to convert, the effort flying over after hitting the crossbar.

City took the lead before half-time, Maclaren awarded the goal after getting a touch on Andrew Nabbout’s flick from a corner.

Crocombe dived low to his left to push away a Craig Noone effort to begin the second half before City doubled its lead, Berenguer putting away a Nabbout cross.

City went 3-0 up through Griffiths, who headed in a Noone cross in the 56th minute.

Metcalfe added two more goals for City in the 74th and 77th minutes before Colakovski’s strike.

on emotions…
“Absolutely gutted. Gutted for the work we’ve put in and everyone who’s here and everyone who’s watched that, all our members and supporters, we apologise to them, it’s not good enough.”

on the game…
“First goal is important, we believed we could get back into it, but just didn’t defend well enough, they did when we were pushing to get into their box, at the end of the day there’s no excuses, it’s not good enough and the scoreline is what it is.”
