Ayres happy with incredible goal

Melbourne Victory attacker Melina Ayres was happy with her stunning strike against the Brisbane Roar, but not the result in the Westfield W-League.

Ayres, 18, produced a moment of magic during Victory’s 2-1 loss at Suncorp Stadium on Friday.

The attacker ran at the Roar defence before unleashing a wonderful 20-yard effort into the top corner to give Victory the lead with her first goal for the club.

“She kept dropping so I thought I would just have a shot so I was pretty happy,” Ayres told Fox Sports.

“But it wasn’t enough today.”

While Ayres gave Victory the lead, second-half headers from Clare Polkinghorne and Celeste Boureille saw Roar to its win.

Victory conceded the equaliser from a corner and the second after initially dealing with another set-piece.

“It’s disappointing, especially after we went 1-0 up and we really needed to win this game,” Ayres said.

“It’s really disappointing, we conceded from two set-pieces so we’re not happy.”
