Regarded as one of the biggest clubs in the world, this trip will be Boca Juniors- first to Australia in its 105 year history. In that time they have won a record 18 international competitions, equal to the feats of Italian giants AC Milan. While domestically they have won 23 national titles – second only to great rivals River Plate (33).

Boca Juniors has had a long standing rivalry with fellow Buenos Aires based club, River Plate. Known as ‘The Superclasico- it is one of the fiercest and most important derbies in world sport – with very little separating the two after more than 300 encounters.

Boca Juniors is considered Argentina-s working class club, with a supporter base approaching 16 million fans, or 40% of the country-s population, in Argentina alone. And with large fan bases in Japan and the USA too, they are without doubt one of the most popular sporting clubs on the planet.

With the tourists committed to bringing its strongest possible squad to Australia, Melbourne Victory Chief Executive Geoff Miles is thrilled by the prospect of entertaining football royalty “Boca Juniors is not just a football club, but an international sporting institution that has launched the careers of some of the world-s best players, including Gabriel Batistuta, current Manchester City and Argentina star Carlos Tevez and the great Diego Maradona.”

“The match promises to be a real spectacle for the fans and we-re confident of yet another strong Melbourne crowd” he added.

Maradona helped put Boca on the world sporting stage. In his first season at the club, the player widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, scored 28 goals in 40 appearances and it wasn-t long before some of Europe-s biggest clubs came knocking.

After a short stint in Spain with Barcelona, Maradona moved to Italy where he dominated at Serie A club Napoli for the best part of a decade, winning 5 trophies in the process. In 1986 Maradona led Argentina to victory at the World Cup and was awarded the Golden Ball for the tournaments best player.

Tickets will go on sale to members on June 9th and to the general public on June 14th.
