Brebner laments individual mistakes

Melbourne Victory

Melbourne Victory head coach Grant Brebner rued individual errors after Wednesday’s 4-1 loss to the Wellington Phoenix in the A-League.

Wellington scored twice in each half at WIN Stadium in Wollongong before Elvis Kamsoba’s late strike for Victory.

Speaking at his post-match news conference, Brebner discussed the game and the possibility of players returning against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday.

on the game…
“I think Wellington tonight weren’t at their best, they had two shots I think in the first half and both of them went in, but I’m sure Uffie (Ufuk Talay) wouldn’t be complaining about that. We played well, but as I’ve said in previous weeks individual mistakes are costing us really dearly and again tonight.”

on speaking to players…
“I think I can hurt them when they’re down, but there’s a truth to that. It’s not a case of just sticking the knife in and twisting it. They know what the coaching staff think of them as players and they’re professional footballers and we have to talk about the uncomfortableness of certain instances in that game and the individual mistakes we’ll talk about, but on the whole tonight the performance was good, but the result is a tough one.”

on players returning…
“Leigh (Broxham) is back from suspension and we’ll have a look at the lads that are still coming back from injury, they’ve got a couple of days to prove their fitness and we can hopefully fly them up on Friday.”

on Ryan Shotton…
“He’s a chance (for Saturday). We need to make sure that he can complete some more training sessions. If it’s not this week, it would hopefully be the weekend after.”
