Both sides had plenty of opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net in the first half, but several gilt-edged chances were missed throughout the early stages at a packed AAMI Park.

Melbourne Victory eventually opened the scoring through Marco Rojas in the 61st minute, but the cross-city opponents were able to hit back through former Victory star Fred, who equalised in the 81st minute.

As the game went into injury time and with a draw looming, Adama Traore superbly robbed Heart's David Williams of possession, before finding Rojas who played a delightful through-ball to Thompson. The rest, as they say, is history.
