Coe has ‘bright future’

Melbourne Victory’s latest recruit Nathan Coe has a ‘bright future’ at the club, according to football operations manager Paul Trimboli.

Melbourne Victory’s latest recruit Nathan Coe has a ‘bright future’ at the club, according to football operations manager Paul Trimboli.

Coe joined Victory on Wednesday, signing a three-year deal after a decade in Europe which included stints with Italian giants Inter Milan and one-time Champions League winners PSV Eindhoven.

And after just completing a successful few seasons at Danish club SonderjyskE, Trimboli anticipates the 28-year-old goalkeeper will only get better at Victory.

“He’s in the Socceroos squad, he’s played at international level, he’s played in Europe for 10 years, been involved with some massive clubs,” Trimboli said.

“He’s a mature-age player, 28 years old, really coming into his prime I think in that sense for a goalkeeper.

“He’s played consistently for the last couple of seasons week in, week out, so I think he’s got a very bright future at the club.”

Despite already having two shot-stoppers in Tando Velaphi and Lawrence Thomas, Trimboli revealed the reason the club sought Coe’s services was a very simple one.

“It’s about bringing quality people to the club. Any time a quality player becomes available, we’re interested,” Trimboli said.

The Victory football operations manager anticipated the addition of Coe to the roster would only serve as a positive for the club’s other custodians.

“Any good club and strong team has competition for places and hopefully those players (Velaphi and Thomas) will see that as a real spur and there’ll be three people competing for the No.1 spot,” Trimboli said.

“We see ourselves as a big club; we want players to come here with pressure on them to perform. We’re not going hide away from that fact. I think those players will be aware of that as well.”

Depending on how quickly Coe obtains his international clearance, Victory’s latest acquisition could be available for selection as soon as this weekend for the side’s clash with Newcastle at Hunter Stadium.
