Folami backs Brebner’s plans

Melbourne Victory’s on-loan youngster Ben Folami has credited a phone call with Grant Brebner as one of the many reasons he signed for the 2020/21 A-League season.

Last week, Folami became Brebner’s sixth pre-season signing – joining Victory from English League One side, Ipswich Town.

The 21-year-old striker describes how a conversation with the Head Coach led to him making an “easy” decision on his future.

“Brebs gave me a call and he ran me through all the ideas that he wanted to implement into Victory and where I would fit into those ideas,” said Folami.

“He sees me as a striker which is great. I can play anywhere across the front but as a striker specifically, so that was good to know he has faith in me to lead the line.”

Folami scored in his most recent appearance for Ipswich and will be hoping for more of the same under under his new Head Coach.

“As a team, he [Brebner] wants Melbourne Victory to play good, entertaining football and ultimately, get results. I really liked the way he set it out to me and it was a no brainer.”

Folami represented Australia in the AFC U23 Championship in January earlier this year, finishing third with the Olyroos.

The versatile forward will be hoping to continue his international career, by having a direct impact in the A-League.

“I think I’ll bring goals, obviously that’s the most important one,” said Folami.

“I’d like to think I can hold the ball up really well and bring others into play. When I get the ball and there’s space for me to turn I can run at defenders, open spaces for others and create chances for myself.”

Folami will meet up with his new teammates in Doha, which is where Victory’s AFC Champions League campaign will recommence in November.

While the striker’s home debut will have to wait, Folami is excited by the prospect of entertaining the Victory members and fans.

“Melbourne Victory being the biggest club in Australia, in my opinion – probably the biggest membership base in the country and all these things played a part in me joining the club,” he said.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic and I can’t wait to get started.”
