Defender Scott Galloway says expectations are high among Melbourne Victory’s playing group, with the the opening round of the Hyundai A-League fast approaching.

The 18-year-old said his hectic pre-season, the first full pre-season for the Young Socceroo in his short career, had been a valuable experience.

“It’s been really good for me to get some decent kilometres in to the legs and the boys are really showing good signs heading in to the season,” Galloway said.

“I can’t wait for the season to start, and the first game is going to be huge as well, with the Melbourne Derby – we want to get off to a good start this time around.”

Galloway said last season’s disappointment, where the club narrowly missed a grand final berth, would provide plenty of motivation for every single player in the squad.

“You never go into anything just to do well, you want to go in and win it and Melbourne Victory is certainly a club that can do that and should be doing that.”

Galloway has seen plenty of game time during the off-season, including an U20 FIFA World Cup campaign for Australia, as well as a solid performance against English giants Liverpool FC at the MCG.

“The Liverpool friendly was amazing – everything about it – atmosphere, the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ song and just the idea of playing on the same field as those players who all have achieved so much,” he said.

“The World Cup was a great experience all round. It was an amazing feeling to go out there and play on the second biggest stage in international football, behind the actual World Cup.

“Our results were disappointing in the end, but we played some great football and I think we are really changing the style, and the opinion that people have of Australian football.”
