Jeff Hopkins was encouraged by Melbourne Victory’s performance in a 2-1 Westfield W-League win over the Newcastle Jets.

Victory produced a fine display and goals from Natasha Dowie and Darian Jenkins at AAMI Park on Sunday lifted them into fourth on the table.

After a second straight win, Hopkins was pleased with the signs shown by his team.

“I think we’ve been working on just improving things week to week and a lot of things we did today were better than last week which is good,” he said.

“I thought we used our width really well today, made use of Lia (Privitelli) in the first half and Darian, but also as a group there’s a few things we think we need to tidy up as well.

“Encouraging performance, obviously we got the three points and we’re up in the top four now, but still a work in progress.”

Jenkins’ goal was her first for the club and came as she celebrated her 25th birthday.

Hopkins praised the American’s display, saying: “First of all, she did great today, both our wide players.

“We looked to target them and get the ball to them as often as possible and the ball seemed to get out to her a little bit more than the other side and she, first half especially, looked so dangerous one versus one up against their full-back.

“It was great to see her get a goal, her first goal, first time at AAMI Park and her birthday so maybe we should play here a bit more often.”
