James Donachie relishing Derby build-up

James Donachie relishing Derby build-up

Melbourne Victory defender James Donachie is relishing the build-up to Saturday night’s Melbourne Derby at Etihad Stadium.

Donachie and City’s Anthony Caceres will be rivals when the 20th Melbourne Derby kicks off, but on Thursday they were in harmony as they faced one of the biggest press packs they’ve experienced in the Hyundai A-League.

With last week’s Sydney Derby resulting in a record crowd of 61,880 and a 4-0 win to Sydney FC, anticipation is rising about what the Melbourne Derby will bring.

“The interest is massive and it’s good because it shows in the number of fans that are coming as well, it heats things up,” Donachie said.

Former Central Coast Mariners midfielder Caceres, who played in the F3 Derby against Newcastle Jets, believes the Melbourne Derby is on another level.

“The scale of things is much larger here in Melbourne, comparing it to the F3 Derby, we obviously expect a much bigger crowd and greater atmosphere,” he said.

“The attention from the press and everyone involved is great. It gets you excited and looking forward to the game.”
