Match Report: FFA Cup, Round of 16

Melbourne Victory has been knocked out of the FFA Cup after losing to Adelaide United 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Second half goals from Johan Absalonsen, George Blackwood and Nathan Konstandopoulous sealed the result for the home side.

In front of 3,342 at Marden Sports Complex, Victory started brightly and had the better of large periods in the first 45 minutes.

Mitch Austin was heavily involved, and was in most of Victory’s better passages of play, but the visitors were unable to capitalise with a goal.

Nikola Mileusnic’s header bouncing off the crossbar in first half stoppage time ended up being a sign of things to come, as Adelaide came out the better side after the break.

Shortly after the restart, it was Absalonsen with the opener, driving a long range shot past Lawrence Thomas.

A handball by Rhys Williams in the area gave Jordan Blackwood a penalty which he converted for Adelaide’s second, while Konstandopoulous sealed the result with another goal from distance in the dying minutes.

It is the first time Victory has been knocked out of the FFA Cup before the quarter finals.
