Melbourne Victory is pleased to announce it has signed German central defender Georg Niedermeier on a one-year deal, subject to the completion of a medical.

Niedermeier, 32, developed his skills in the Bayern Munich youth academy before making the move to VfB Stuttgart where he would go on to make 182 appearances across eight seasons.

It was during his time at Stuttgart that Niedermeier formed a formidable defensive partnership with Championship-winner and Victory Medallist Matthieu Delpierre.

Most recently, Niedermeier played for Bundesliga side SC Freiburg.

Head Coach Kevin Muscat was delighted to have secured the services of the experienced defender.

“Georg has great defensive qualities and will play an important role in leading our backline this season,” Muscat said.

“His big-game experience in the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League and Europa League will be extremely valuable.

“While Georg is certainly an important addition, we are working hard to continue to add to the overall quality of the squad.”

Niedermeier will travel to Melbourne early next week to complete a medical and finalise the move.
