The Melbourne Victory Schools 5-a-side program has concluded for a second year, with participation growing from 3500 to over 6300 grade three and four students from over 260 Victorian primary schools in 2009.

The program travelled over 6800 km and included 36 Gala Days, 12 of which were held in regional areas.

Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Victory Women players visited the large majority of Gala Days participating in clinics, assisting with skill development sessions, completing a question-and-answer session, signing autographs and posing for photos.

This free program provided the opportunity for participant development of basic football skills and physical activity in a non-competitive and fun environment.

Participants received their own exclusive Melbourne Victory merchandise pack, while 260 students were given the opportunity to play 5-a-side at half time of a Melbourne Victory home game at Etihad Stadium. A further 600 students also attended home games through ticket giveaways.

100 coaches from Football Federation Victoria’s Sports Education and Development Australia (SEDA) program and 225 additional student coaches were involved in running the Melbourne Victory Schools 5-a-side program, providing them with the opportunity to gain invaluable coaching experience.

Melbourne Victory and FFV would like to thank Christ the King Cobram, Emmanuel College, Hallam Senior Secondary, Kardinia International College, McGuire College Shepparton, Mowbray College, Reservoir District Secondary College, Swan Hill Secondary College and Wodonga Senior Secondary for their assistance throughout the year.

Melbourne Victory, in conjunction with FFV, Football Federation Australia and the Victorian State Government acknowledges the strong support from the respective local councils and junior clubs who have hosted the Gala Days, allowing the program to be possible.

Congratulations and thank you to all participating students, teachers, parents and volunteers who assisted with a second successful year of Melbourne Victory Schools 5-a-side program in 2009.
