More than bragging rights on the line in NYL Derby

Melbourne Victory will look to make it two from two against Melbourne City in the Foxtel National Youth League when the two sides face off at CB Smith Reserve, Fawkner on Sunday.

Currently in a rich vein of form, Victory is gunning for its fourth straight win after an impressive 3-2 defeat of Perth Glory on the road last week.

Captain Joey Katebian led from the front once again, scoring twice, while Stefan Nigro also found the back of the net.

City is likely to provide a stiffer challenge though, as it proved in the first Derby of the season three weeks ago.

Victory tasted success in a thriller on that day at Lakeside Stadium, running out 5-4 winners.

A second-half comeback from the visitors made the Victory work hard to hold on for the three points – something development coach Vaughan Coveny has not forgotten.

“We know that we did some things well (in that match) and there are some areas of improvement from the second half,” Coveny said.

“We’ve worked on that during the week. When you play the derbies, there is always some added spice to it. We’ll be looking forward to it.”

City returns to Victoria on the back of a 3-1 loss away to Conference A leaders Adelaide United in Round 6 of the Foxtel National Youth League.

Christopher Cristaldo and Wade Dekker have demonstrated their prowess in front of goal so far and are two men the Victory rearguard will need to monitor closely.

A win against its neighbours would see the Victory break away from Brisbane Roar, Perth Glory and City in the standings.

Victory has raced out of the blocks in recent weeks and will be seeking to do so again in its ultimate quest of topping Conference A.

Entry to the match is $10 for adults and $5 concession, with kids under 14 free.
