NPL preview: Victory v Manningham

NPL preview: Victory v Manningham

Melbourne Victory is looking to bounce back when it hosts Manningham United Blues in the NPL2 West on Sunday.

Summary

Victory suffered a 6-2 loss to Moreland City in Round 23 as it was overrun in the second half at Campbell Reserve.

Yazid Said, 19, scored a brace for Victory, twice bringing it level away from home, but it was punished for its mistakes during the second half.

The attacker now has eight goals this season, equal most with Jack Palazzolo, 19, for Victory.

Victory has battled hard in recent weeks, but it has suffered four straight losses after also going down to Werribee City, Brunswick City and Whittlesea Ranges.

Ninth on the NPL2 West table, it welcomes Manningham United to Epping Stadium in Round 24.

Manningham is sixth in the NPL2 East in its first season in the league, having been promoted last year.

Head coach Gareth Naven’s pre-match thoughts

“What I do know is that our first 33 minutes against Moreland City were very good and what I’d like to propose to our team is that they start to consider what they need to do for themselves in a tactical response, what they need to do for the team and our application towards doing that. That’s what I want our group to consider and have the focused mindset to perform that more often in the match. We’ve proven during the year it’s achievable as we’ve had many encounters in the NPL2 competition where we have been very good, so it’s about repeating those performances more and more often and that’s all I want our group to consider. What does it take to repeat the performances that you know make you know make you feel good, make the team feel good, make you proud of being part of the team? That’s what I want our team to focus on.”
