NPL preview: Victory v St Albans

NPL preview: Victory v St Albans

Melbourne Victory looks to extend its unbeaten run in the NPL2 West when it hosts the St Albans Saints on Saturday.

Victory is unbeaten in its past three games, following up its 4-1 win over Brunswick City with goalless draws against Altona Magic and the Moreland Zebras.

That has left it in fifth place on the table through four games this campaign.

Goalkeeper Matthew Sutton, who is a scholarship player at the club, has kept back-to-back clean sheets.

But there is set to be a change to his back four when St Albans visits Epping Stadium after Cameron McGilp, 20, was sent off late against the Zebras.

Victory has played three of its opening four games of the season at home, winning one, drawing one and losing the other.

It hosts a St Albans side sitting second on the table and coming off back-to-back wins.

Victory and the Saints last met in July 2015, with the former claiming a 2-1 win at Churchill Reserve.

Head coach Gareth Naven
“We’re focusing on more of the same. We want to do the basics well, get the defensive structures in place and get ready for another competitive game. We’ll try and maintain our application and intensity towards the opposition and we’re just getting better at what we do. Also, giving opportunities to people where Yazid (Said) came on and did a good job (against Moreland) and I’d like to think at training he can keep working hard to get the benefit. Hopefully now we just add some goals to it.”
