NPL preview: Victory v Werribee

Melbourne Victory looks to bounce back when it hosts Werribee City in the NPL2 West on Sunday.

Summary

After making a strong start to the season by beating Ballarat City 4-0, Victory was beaten in Geelong in Round 2.

It had its moments in patches against Geelong, but was unable to capitalise on its good periods.

Rahmat Akbari, 18, went closest to scoring for Victory, having two efforts hit the woodwork during the encounter.

Josh Hope, 21, was lively at Stead Park, but Victory lacked a final pass despite putting together several good moves.

Victory returns to action at Epping Stadium, hosting league leader Werribee City.

The teams last met in the final round of last season, with Werribee recording a 3-1 win.

Head coach Gareth Naven's pre-match thoughts

"Last week, you saw moments where you could definitely see their best and we need that more this week. We always need that more and the challenge for our young players, and they're getting better at it, is to make sure they can repeat the performance. I know we lost last week, but within that there were definitely areas we were doing very well at and obviously there are more things we've got to develop and be more consistent in delivering the type of performance we're capable of. I'd like to think we can come up against Werribee, who have won their first two games and are going really, really well, to make sure we show them we're here for a competitive game."
