Melbourne Victory begins its Foxtel National Youth League campaign against Brisbane Roar on Saturday.

Led by coach Gareth Naven, Victory heads to Spencer Park for its opening game of the season.

The competition has retained its eight-game, two-conference format, with Victory missing out on a Grand Final spot by nine points last season.

Naven is ready for the new season, which comes less than three months after the end of his team’s PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria campaign.

“We’ve conducted a fair few trials, retained a few players, gave them 4-5 weeks off and October 1 we were back in,” he said.

“We’ve been slowly getting better, slowly understanding what we’re trying to get better at and just understanding different situations that the match provides us at times.

“I think we’re slowly adapting to how we want to improve and how we want to play and obviously in conjunction with the Melbourne Victory way.”

Victory and Brisbane met twice in Conference A last season, with Roar winning on both occasions.
