Report: Victory 2-3 Jets

Melbourne Victory suffered a 3-2 extra-time loss to the Newcastle Jets in the FFA Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday.

Summary

A brace from Andrew Nabbout put Victory in control in Marco Kurz’s first game in charge at AAMI Park.

However, goals from Johnny Koutroumbis and Dimitri Petratos forced extra-time before Patrick Langlois struck in the 113th minute.

Victory’s defence held firm early before it threatened in the 11th minute, Nabbout forcing a near-post save from Jets goalkeeper Lewis Italiano from a tight angle.

However, Victory needed a great save from Lawrence Thomas five minutes later, the goalkeeper denying Kaine Sheppard in a one-on-one.

The chances continued to come at both ends, with Victory striker Kenny Athiu firing wide from inside the area in the 19th minute.

Nabbout had the ball in the back of the net midway through the first half after a wonderful pass from Elvis Kamsoba, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Dangerous throughout the first half, Nabbout shot across the face of goal four minutes before the break after a brilliant ball from 19-year-old debutant Brandon Lauton.

Nabbout would score in first-half additional time, firing in via the underside of the crossbar after a pass from Kamsoba.

Victory was pushed back to begin the second half and Thomas dived to his right to palm away a Petratos strike in the 58th minute.

Nabbout doubled Victory’s lead just after the hour-mark, finishing with the outside of his boot following a pass from Athiu.

The Jets pulled a goal back through Koutroumbis, whose deflected 30-yard effort beat Thomas in the 74th minute.

Newcastle drew level with nine minutes remaining, Petratos rifling a powerful effort past Matt Acton, who replaced the injured Thomas.

Acton was forced into two saves by Petratos before Ola Toivonen, also introduced off the bench, blazed over for Victory in additional time.

Kamsoba almost restored Victory’s lead, but he volleyed wide from inside the area after a superb flick from Toivonen in the 97th minute.

Newcastle went close in the 110th minute, Acton saving onto the post after a header from Abdiel Arroyo.

But the Jets found the winner through Langlois, who turned on the edge of the area before picking out the bottom corner.
