Melbourne Victory head coach Carlos Salvachua rued his side’s mistakes in a 2-1 Derby loss to City in the Hyundai A-League on Friday.

Florin Berenguer and Jamie Maclaren scored for City at AAMI Park before Ola Toivonen’s second-half free-kick.

Speaking at his post-match news conference, Salvachua discussed the performance and the injury that saw Robbie Kruse leave the field late on.

on the performance…
“Firstly, I say thank you to the fans for their support for 90 minutes trying to help the team, but tonight was not our night. With the ball we had problems, we didn’t create chances, just a couple of chances in the first half from one corner and another free-kick. We did mistakes for both goals, it was too easy for them to score the goals and then City dropped and they were really compact and it was difficult for us to open the defence.”

on Kruse…
“We have to wait for tomorrow, but he doesn’t feel good, with problems in the hamstring and he went out and then it was more difficult of course to finish the game, losing and with 10 players.”

on possession…
“We had to switch the ball. And a lot of times, we started on one side and we want to finish on the same side and we have to switch to the side that is clear. If we are doing well something it’s because our back four was pushing up every time and today we created some gaps and we were a little bit deep.”

on tough season…
“Difficult is in the first day of course because we won four games in 16 games now and this is difficult, but we need to win six, seven games in nine and we have to do and next focus is on the AFC Champions League next Tuesday, another two games against big teams and we have the first game here in AAMI Park.”
