Victory beaten by Reds in Youth League

Victory beaten by Reds in Youth League

Melbourne Victory suffered a 2-1 loss to Adelaide United in an entertaining Foxtel National Youth League encounter at Lakeside Stadium on Saturday.

An 82nd-minute goal from Jordan O’Doherty saw Conference A leader Adelaide to its win after Dylan Smith’s opener had been cancelled out by a Joey Katebian penalty.

Daniel Margush produced a late penalty save to deny Katebian as the Reds took a huge step towards the Grand Final.

The Adelaide goalkeeper was influential throughout, including denying Katebian and Kieran Dover in the first half.

The Reds took the lead in the 53rd minute through Smith, who worked his way into the area before firing into the roof of the net from an angle.

Victory responded almost immediately, Katebian scoring from the penalty spot for his 10th of the season after being clattered into in the area.

A pair of superb Lucas Spinella saves kept the scores level, while the crossbar came to his rescue when O’Doherty curled a 30-yard free-kick onto the woodwork.

Margush denied Katebian once more before Adelaide’s winner through O’Doherty, who scrambled in at the back post after Spinella had denied Antoni Trimboli.

Victory was awarded a second penalty late on, but Margush dived to his left to keep out Katebian’s effort.
