Melbourne Victory has been defeated 3-0 by Canberra United in an entertaining contest at McKellar Park on Saturday.

Victory came into the game with renewed confidence after coming from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers last week.

Players were met with warm conditions in the nation’s capital, however it didn’t seem effect the opening exchanges, with both teams showing plenty of attacking intent.

Canberra started the brighter of the two teams and created the best chance of the first half when Ashleigh Sykes saw her effort crash into the crossbar.

Both teams appeared to tire in the hot conditions, however the additional drinks breaks midway through each half helped ease the heat.

After half-time United looked reinvigorated, and had the lead in 46th minute.

Michelle Heyman found the dangerous Jenna McCormick, who made no mistake with the finish, leaving Melissa Barbieri with little chance of saving.

Victory looked to respond after conceding, with Haley Raso, Christine Nairn and MelindaJ Barbieri all prominent, but struggling to create clear-cut chances.

Ashleigh Sykes put the home side 2-0 up in the 56th minute, when she prodded home with a well-taken finish from inside the area.

Christine Nairn went close to reducing the two-goal deficit, but saw her free-kick sail just over the bar.

United extended their lead again in 81st minute, with Heyman grabbing her first goal of the game.

Victory pushed for a way back into the contest, but couldn’t manage to fashion many clear-cut chances against the reigning Westfield W-League Champions.
