Victory fights back for classic Derby win

Melbourne Victory recorded a memorable come-from-behind 2-1 Derby win over City in the Hyundai A-League on Saturday night.

Summary

After an Alan Baro own goal put City ahead at Etihad Stadium, Besart Berisha levelled with a tap-in in the 84th minute following good work by Marco Rojas.

But there was more drama to come as Victory found a late winner, Manny Muscat turning a Jason Geria cross into his own net.

Berisha had a penalty earlier saved by City goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis, who was powerless to stop the late show.

The win saw Victory end a three-match losing streak in the most dramatic of fashion, consolidating second spot on the table.

Victory made just one change to its starting XI beaten by Sydney FC last time out, with Nick Ansell replacing the suspended James Donachie.

Kevin Muscat’s team made the brighter start in the Derby, Rojas almost giving it the lead as his looping effort landed on the roof of the net.

There was no real rhythm to the game in the first half, but Berisha almost put Victory ahead before the interval, just unable to get on the end of Baro’s cross from the right.

Victory had the better opportunities to start the second half as both James Troisi and Fahid Ben Khalfallah fired shots straight at Bouzanis.

The biggest chance came from the spot in the 63rd minute after Luke Brattan dragged down Rojas in the area.

But Berisha’s well-struck spot-kick was kept out by Bouzanis, who dived to his right to palm it away.

City went ahead in the 70th minute as an effort by Neil Kilkenny was deflected by Baro into the bottom corner.

But Victory fought back in stunning fashion.

Rojas tricked his way down the right before cutting back for Berisha to tap in and make it 1-1 in the 84th minute.

And just two minutes later, Victory found a late winner as Muscat turned Geria’s cross past Bouzanis.

Tim Cahill was sent off without coming on and Victory held on to take all three points.

Victory’s next outing is a trip to face Newcastle Jets next Saturday.
