Victory ready for W-League take-off against Jets

Melbourne Victory will be looking for its first points of the Westfield W-League season when it takes on Newcastle Jets at ABD Stadium, Broadmeadows on Saturday at 3.00pm AEDT.

Dave Edmondson’s side has suffered two 2-1 losses in as many weeks, defeated by Perth Glory and Melbourne City to open the season.

Despite the results, the youthful Victory outfit demonstrated on both occasions that it has what it takes to match it with some of the league’s best.

Their commitment and pressure on and off the ball ensured City would have a hard day at the office, with Annabel Martin and Briar Palmer shining in defence.

It took a goal from a spot-kick and one from open play to undo the well organised Victory, who struck back in the dying embers of the game thanks to a wonder strike from Whitney Knight.

Another formidable challenge will be in store on the weekend when the Jets come to town on the back of an impressive scoreless draw away to reigning Premiers Perth.

The Jets proved to be a tricky opponent last season, tripping up the Victory once before Melbourne exacted revenge with a 4-0 win at home.

A similar result would be preferable for Victory when the two go head-to-head once again.
