Victory to take on Canberra in Round 3

The Melbourne Victory W-league team will travel to Canberra to take on Canberra United in Round 3 of the Westfield W-League this weekend.

The Melbourne Victory W-league team will travel to Canberra to take on Canberra United in Round 3 of the Westfield W-League this weekend.

Victory lost to Sydney FC in their first match of the season last weekend, 4-1, in terrible conditions at Latrobe City Stadium. Canberra United defeated Perth Glory in round 1, and drew with Brisbane Roar last weekend.

Despite the hefty score line, coach Vicki Linton was happy with the team-s first up performance for the season.

“There are a lot of positives to come out of it, and we-ve been focusing on that leading into this Saturday-s game against Canberra,” Linton said.

“This week we-ve been reinforcing some of the things we had been working on for the past couple of months, because we probably were just a little bit tentative in attack last week.”

The team will also be without captain Melissa Barbieri, who injured her ankle last weekend. Linton said losing Melissa-s experience will be tough on the team, but is confident young ‘keeper, Brianna Davey, will step up to the challenge.

“Brianna-s a really talented young goal keeper and has experience with the under 17 national team. During the preseason trial matches she was playing in the team while Melissa Barbieri was away with the Matildas, and while we lose a lot of experience with Melissa away, Brianna-s technically really good and we-re confident she-ll be able to step up,” Linton said.

Marlies Oostdam will take over the captaincy for Victory this weekend.

“Marlies is our oldest player in the team and she-s got a lot of international experience. Leading into the season she-s been someone who-s shown a lot of leadership and we-ll be looking to utilise that experience this weekend,” Linton said.
