“I think every A-League player will say the same thing and to start the season with the Derby, it’s always fantastic… everyone’s eager and everyone is just ready to go,” Broxham said.

“The feeling is good (in the squad), Ange has made some good signings and there’s a lot of depth in the team and a lot of competition for spots too.”

Broxham, who captained the side against English giants Liverpool in July, said there was no added pressure from being asked to wear the armband.

“It’s something Ange has asked me to do, I’m happy to fill in for Millsy (Milligan) – he’s obviously a great captain – and nothing really changes for me whether I’m wearing the armband or not,” the 25-year-old said.

“I’m pretty focussed on my football at the moment. For me to be captain, it’s a bonus, but there are a lot of good leaders on the pitch at the moment… people like Pablo (Contreras) and Ado (Adrian Leijer) are still great leaders.”
