Muscat said he was looking forward to the challenge of facing Marcello Lippi’s powerful side.

“The boys have been in good spirits,” Muscat said.

“We’re well aware of their capabilities of a football team. They’ve spent big in the past couple of years and are the biggest team in Asia.

“For us, we made no secrets about wanting to qualify for the Asian Champions League. So the fact we’ve drawn the current title holders adds a fair bit to it.”

Muscat said while Guangzhou Evergrande may still be in their pre-season campaign, he had no doubt the home side would start as heavy favourites.

“It’s going to be a difficult evening for us, but on these occasions you never know what they could throw up,” he said.

“It gives us a chance to play against a very good side and very good individuals, but that challenge is one we’re willing to meet head on.”
