The 35-year-old will join the rest of the squad in Tasmania this week and could make his debut this Sunday in a pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers in Hobart.

“I’m very happy to come here for this great opportunity,” Contreras said.

“I hope for the best, I hope to help the team and once I’ve finished the season I hope we can win the Championship.

“This is the most popular team in Australia, so I thank everyone for this great opportunity and I hope the very best for the team.”

Melbourne Victory coach Ange Postecoglou said Contreras would bring plenty of experience to the football club and all players would see the benefits from working with the Chilean international.

“We’ve worked very hard over the last few months to make sure we got the right person that fit not only in a football sense, but as a person as well,” Postecoglou said.

“We’ve got a really exciting, young team and we need some really good, experienced football players, quality players, and Pablo fits the bill.”
