Melbourne Victory defender Adrian Leijer says Saturday night’s win in the Melbourne Derby was the best Christmas gift for Victory players and fans.

Leijer said unsurprisingly there was a good feeling in the side, following the 3-1 defeat of cross-town rivals, Heart.

“The most important thing was the win,” Leijer said.

“It is a results business and I suppose the most important thing is we are picking up points, but the way we’ve always gone about it is all about the performance. While we were patchy last night, we did play some good football in stages.

“Early on, we were a bit sloppy in our passing and ball retention and that probably gave them a bit of hope – but football is not won in the first 20 minutes, it’s a 90 minute game. We know we’ve got players who are going to be dangerous and create chances.”

Leijer also heaped praise on last night’s man-of-the-match Mitch Nichols, who netted two goals in the victory.

“He has been pretty good, he’ll tell you that himself I think,” Leijer said.

“From the first day he walked in the dressing room he was part of the team and he’s a very, very talented footballer and the way he’s playing, he can have aspirations for Brazil.”
