Melbourne Victory defender Nick Ansell says last night’s controversial semi-final loss was ‘going to take some time to get over’.

Press play on the video below to hear what Nick Ansell had to say as Melbourne Victory players returned to Melbourne following last night’s 1-0 loss.

Ansell said the feeling amongst his teammates was of immense disappointment.

The 21-year-old defender said he believed it wasn’t just the non-penalty call that was the difference on the night, despite believing the referee had made a mistake in not awarding the penalty.

“We had 90 minutes to score a goal and we didn’t do that, so we’ll have to go back to the drawing board for next year and go one better,” Ansell said.

“From the start of the season we’ve been working to make it to the Grand Final and we haven’t made it so it feels like all that work leading up to it doesn’t matter.”

Ansell also praised his teammates for their efforts in the past few weeks, with a hectic schedule taking its toll on the entire squad.

He said everyone in the side was hurting after last night’s defeat.

“I don’t think there’s anything you can do to get over it. We gave it our all. I don’t think you can question anyone’s efforts,” he said.

“It will definitely take a couple of weeks to feel better about it all.”
