Johnston, who also spoke to the Victory squad, said players had to make the most of the opportunity to play in front of close to 100,000 people.

“It’s going to be the biggest game of their (Melbourne Victory players) lives, and playing against Liverpool, they’ll remember it forever,” Johnston said.

“For the first time in my life, I would like to Liverpool to be beaten. Why? Because it’s not a league game, it’s a pre-season friendly, and I love what Ange does.

“This is (Melbourne Victory’s) Cup Final, and for Liverpool it’s a pre-season friendly. So for the first time ever, I wish you would beat my team.”

Postecoglou said it would be a huge night for the club, with potentially up to seven players under the age of 21 on the pitch, providing plenty of opportunities for the club’s young brigade.

“We want entertainment, we want goals,” Postecoglou said.

“We’ve got some young players who are going to play the game of their life Wednesday night and I wanted them to hear how hard Craig had to work to get to that level and play for Liverpool and what he had to go through because it is an inspirational story.”

Melbourne Victory will take on Liverpool FC on Wednesday night at the MCG, kick-off 8pm. The match will be broadcast across the country on 7mate.
