W-League report: Glory 0-1 Victory

Annalie Longo

Melbourne Victory climbed back into third on the Westfield W-League table after a 1-0 win over Perth Glory on Tuesday.

Summary

Annalie Longo tapped in a 62nd-minute winner for Victory at Dorrien Gardens as it extended its unbeaten run to six matches.

The midfielder’s second goal in as many games saw Victory return to third on the table, two points clear of fifth-placed Canberra United.

After a lively start by both sides, chances started to come following the opening 20 minutes.

Lisa De Vanna fired wide for Victory before the visitor needed a couple of great saves from goalkeeper Gaby Garton to stay level.

Garton denied Caitlin Doeglas in a one-on-one in the 21st minute before the shot-stopper kept out the forward again five minutes later, while Amy Jackson was just unable to get on the end of a fine Kyra Cooney-Cross set-piece in between those chances.

Victory looked threatening from set-pieces to finish the first half, with Kayla Morrison forcing Glory goalkeeper Lily Alfeld to tip her header over the crossbar following a Cooney-Cross corner two minutes before the break.

Jackson tested Alfeld with a volley from inside the area in the 54th minute before Victory captain Angela Beard saw a cross deflected just wide following a powerful run down the left.

Victory opened the scoring shortly after the hour-mark thanks to Longo’s second goal in as many games.

Cooney-Cross beat her defender down the left before cutting back for Longo to tap in and make it 1-0.

That proved to be enough for Victory, which closed out an important three points away from home.
