W-League wrap: Koca breaks record in defeat

W-League wrap: Koca breaks record in defeat

Melbourne Victory was unable to mark Gulcan Koca’s record-breaking appearance with a win, going down 2-1 to Adelaide United on Friday.

Koca played her 66th Westfield W-League game for the club – a Victory record – in the final round of the season at Marden Sports Complex.

While Kyra Cooney-Cross, 15, was on the scoresheet for Victory, the Reds claimed their win thanks to goals from Makenzy Doniak and Jenna McCormick.

The result left Victory in seventh on the table ahead of the weekend’s games.

The host made the better start and took the lead in the 17th minute, Doniak producing a calm finish to open the scoring.

While Adelaide was on top, Victory struck four minutes prior to the break, Cooney-Cross levelling with her second goal of the season.

However, the Reds restored their lead in the 57th minute through McCormick.

While Victory had its chances in the closing stages – Melina Ayres, Lia Privitelli and MelindaJ Barbieri threatening – it was unable to find another equaliser.
