Werribee City defeated Melbourne Victory 1-0 in the PlayStation 4 NPL2 West at Epping Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

George Slefendorfas opened the scoring for the visitors in the 56th minute, nodding home from close range after a well-weighted free kick found him at the back post. It would prove to be the decisive goal of the game

Strong winds made the going tough for both sides, who struggled to create clear-cut chances in the early stages of the game.

Victory’s Brady Quinn had the only notable opportunity of the opening half, flashing a shot just wide of the upright from the edge of the area in the sixth minute.

Werribee had a dream start to the second half, taking the lead through Slefendorfas.

Victory did have an immediate opportunity to equalise, but Brandon Jansz couldn’t turn Aleksandar Stanisljevic’s low cross on goal.

Despite Victory’s best efforts, it was Werribee who looked the most likely to score again.

The most notable effort came in the 82nd minute when Brad Murray fired a rocket on goal from distance, forcing a strong save from Majak Mawith.

Earlier in the day, Melbourne Victory’s U-20s defeated Werribee City 4-1.

Victory heads to Shepparton for its next match against Goulburn Valley Suns on Saturday, 12 August.
