Win the only focus in Perth

Win the only focus in Perth

Melbourne Victory will attack Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Saturday night as they look to improve on their losing record in the west, according to coach Ange Postecoglou.

Victory have won just twice on 11 trips to the Glory’s home ground, but come into the clash in good form.

Postecoglou’s men have lost only twice in their past 12 outings to sit third on the Hyundai A-League table.

Despite being without Nick Ansell (groin), Gui Finkler (knee) and Billy Celeski (suspension) for the trip to Perth, Victory will not sit back and play for a point.

“Teams I coach, we try and win wherever we go,” Postecoglou told reporters.

“If you put up barriers of thinking that something is going to be a tough trip and go over there with a negative mindset then – particularly at a place like Perth – you let them get on top of you.

“They don’t have a massive crowd but they’ve got a real vocal crowd that lifts their team.

“From our point of view it’s just about continuing our form and going there and trying to win a game of football and not be reserved or conservative in our approach.”

The Glory are winless in their past four matches and Ian Ferguson will be eager for his men to get back to winning ways and hang on to their top-six spot.

A point at Perth is an acceptable result for most teams, but Postecoglou wants more from his side, who will continue to attack as they have been all season.

“It is a long trip but half that is just the mental battle,” he said.

“With any kind of game you can build yourself up to believing it’s going to be something but ultimately it’s all just a game of football that we’re going to try and win.

“I guess the beauty for us is that our approach every week doesn’t really change.

“The players have certainly understood that by now whether we’re playing home or away or whatever team we’re playing we’re going to try and win a game.

“We’re certainly not going to go over there trying not to lose and because of that mentality it shouldn’t really matter how far you’re travelling or the ground you’re playing at.

“You’re trying to outplay the opposition and get the points (and) that’s what we’ll be doing tomorrow.”

One of James Jeggo or Jonathan Bru will come into the side for Celeski, while Leigh Broxham will replace Ansell.
