Y-League preview: Victory v Glory

Y-League preview: Victory v Glory

Melbourne Victory is out to bounce back when it hosts Perth Glory in the Foxtel Y-League on Saturday.

Summary

Victory suffered a late 3-2 loss to Adelaide United in its opener at VALO Football Centre.

Yazid Said, 19, and Nicholas Sette, 18, were on the scoresheet for Victory, which took a first-half lead and then equalised late before conceding in additional time.

Said produced a composed finish in a one-on-one for the opener, while Sette’s goal came after a well-worked team move, with Birkan Kirdar providing the assist.

Daniel Aye, 19, and Stefan Ristic, 18, made their Victory debuts in the defeat.

While Victory was beaten on Saturday, it saw Josh Hope – who played in the Foxtel Y-League last season – score his first senior goal in the Hyundai A-League side’s win over the Central Coast Mariners a day later.

Perth Glory started its campaign with a 2-1 win at home to Brisbane Roar.

When the teams last met – in the final round of last season – Perth overcame Victory 3-1 at Epping Stadium.

Head coach Gareth Naven’s pre-match thoughts

“It’s our second game, we’ll go into Perth and we want to make sure that it’s important we have the same attitude for the game as we did against Adelaide, try get better at defending, bit more aggressive in our approach to attacking and looking forward to a really hard game against Perth, which I’m sure all the boys will be ready for. It’s just nice to be playing matches again and preparing for the week, rather than preparing in pre-season, so those matches have come around really quick and players are excited to get on with it.

“In football, situations move quickly and I think someone like Josh Hope travels through the Y-League, the NPL competition, comes out scoring his debut goal for the club at Melbourne Victory and it’s a nice story for Josh and nice story for our youth team players to see that happen as well.”
