Melbourne Victory suffered a 4-1 loss to Brisbane Roar in its first game of the Foxtel Y-League season on Sunday.

Corey Gameiro scored a brace for Brisbane, with Victory midfielder Josh Hope having a penalty saved when his side was 1-0 down at Lanham Park.

After Daniel Leck put the hosts 3-0 up, forward Nuh Sehavdic pulled a goal back for Victory, but Mirza Muratovic sealed Roar’s win.

Victory head coach Gareth Naven said there was plenty his team needed to work on.

“For a start, we’re trying to do the right things in possession and playing football and trying to progress forward up field to get in behind to score. We need to keep doing that,” he said.

“We definitely need to stop conceding goals through unforced errors in the way we deal with crosses and coughing the ball up quickly once we regain it or in transition.

“They’re just control of moments that we know we’ve worked on and we just open ourselves up to be punished.

“We’ve got to be better at our defensive capabilities. It’s something we’ve tried to work on and will continue to work on.

“It was our second game so far. In an individual capacity, they did OK, but with this game out of the way and done, I’d like to see us improve more and more.

“I stress to the boys that it’s a game that you have to have the ability to run, and run hard, with and without the ball, and defend hard with and without the ball.

“Some good things, some things we need to stop and things we need to keep working on and improving on.”

Victory are next in action with a Derby clash against City on Sunday, December 3.
